There are sunsets you happen to catch, and then there are the ones you plan for.
Across the Mediterranean, the final hours of the day have a rhythm of their own. Lunch stretches later than intended, swims turn into aperitivo, and somewhere between the last dip and the first drink, no one is particularly interested in checking the time.
From a monumental golden sun overlooking Hydra to a bar carved directly into the cliffs of Menorca, these are six places that make a case for building an entire afternoon around sunset — and what to wear when you get there.

HYDRA, GREECE

WHY IT'S ON THE LIST
Hydra has long attracted artists, writers and people looking for a Greek island that operates at a slightly different pace. There are no cars on the island, donkeys still move luggage through the harbour, and its stone houses rise almost theatrically from the water.
Walk west from Hydra's port and you'll eventually reach an old slaughterhouse sitting alone above the sea. Since 2009, the DESTE Foundation has transformed the tiny building into an exhibition space, inviting a different contemporary artist to take it over each year.
Then came Jeff Koons.
His 2022 Apollo exhibition turned the former slaughterhouse into a surreal shrine to the Greek god, complete with the enormous Apollo Wind Spinner outside: a reflective golden sun whose rays move in the Aegean wind. The exhibition itself was temporary, but the Wind Spinner was subsequently presented to the island of Hydra.
It's strange, monumental and completely unexpected — especially against the otherwise raw Cycladic landscape.
HOW TO DO IT
Spend the afternoon slowly. Wander Hydra Town, stop for lunch, swim from the rocks and make your way along the coastal path later in the day. DESTE's Hydra Project Space operates seasonally, typically between June and October, with its exhibition changing each year, so check what's currently showing before you go.
The point isn't really to rush through an exhibition. It's the walk, the building, the art and the Aegean landscape becoming part of the same experience.
THE VIBE
Art-world sunset. Quietly cool rather than conspicuously luxurious. Hydra isn't asking you to dress for Mykonos.
WHAT TO WEAR
Keep it restrained: fluid trousers, an asymmetric top, leather sandals, sculptural jewellery and very good sunglasses.

Cova d'en Xoroi
WHY IT'S ON THE LIST
This one barely looks real.
On Menorca's southern coast, a series of natural caves and terraces are suspended directly into a limestone cliff above the Mediterranean. Inside them is Cova d'en Xoroi — part cocktail bar, part music venue and one of the most extraordinary places on the island to watch the light disappear.
Its name comes with a legend. According to local folklore, Xoroi was a mysterious man — possibly a shipwreck survivor — who took refuge inside the cave. He later disappeared into the sea after his hiding place was discovered. The story still gives the place a slightly mythical quality.
Today, the cave changes personality as the day progresses. Aperitivo gives way to its dedicated Sunset Time session with live music, before the space transforms again for the night.
HOW TO DO IT
Sunset Time is the one to book. Get there early enough to actually explore the cave passages and terraces before everyone turns toward the horizon.
And don't arrive expecting dinner: Cova d'en Xoroi is a cocktail bar and doesn't serve food. Make dinner the next stop.
There's also an actual dress code. Beachwear and sportswear aren't permitted during the sunset session, so this isn't somewhere to wander into straight from the sand in a bikini.
THE VIBE
Balearic, but more mysterious than Ibiza. Bare rock, warm skin, cocktails, live music and nothing between the terrace and the horizon.
WHAT TO WEAR
The surroundings already do a lot, so the clothes can feel undone without being overly beachy. Draping, exposed shoulders, relaxed tailoring, woven textures and flat sandals work beautifully here.

Hidden in the Bay of Cartaromana, the seaside resort sits opposite the medieval Castello Aragonese, with decks suspended over the water, pools, a rock solarium and ladders dropping directly into the sea.
The setting has layers of history beneath all that beauty. Giardino Eden sits in what was once the bay of Aenaria, a Roman settlement now submerged beneath the water, with activity dating from around the first century BCE.
And then there's its guestbook. Over the years, names including Kate Moss, Lenny Kravitz, Tommy Hilfiger, Antonio Banderas and Danny DeVito have left messages behind.
Somehow, it still feels more like an Italian secret than a celebrity beach club.
HOW TO DO IT
Don't come only for sunset. This is an arrive-for-lunch-and-forget-the-time place.
Book the beach club, claim a spot on the sea deck or rock solarium, swim, have lunch, order something cold from Ugo's Bar and stay into the early evening. The beach club currently operates until 7 p.m. in season and reservations are mandatory.
As evening arrives, Giardino Eden's restaurant transitions into Fluctus, its dinner concept, so you can effectively let the entire day unfold in one place.
THE VIBE
Old-school Italian seaside glamour without the performance of Capri. The kind of place that makes you want to wear a scarf in your hair for no practical reason.
WHAT TO WEAR
Take your cues from vintage Italian resort dressing: a fluid dress, oversized sunglasses, woven bag, flat sandals and gold jewellery.

Ibiza has no shortage of places willing to sell you a sunset. Sunset Ashram makes this list because the landscape still gets top billing.
Perched at Cala Conta on Ibiza's western coast, the venue sits almost organically among the rocks, surrounded by that particular electric-blue Balearic water. The experience is deliberately built around the moment the sun reaches the horizon: food, cocktails, music and a crowd facing west.
It's Ibiza at its best — social, slightly bohemian and aware that sunset should be treated as an event.
HOW TO DO IT
Make a day of Cala Conta rather than arriving five minutes before sunset. Swim during the afternoon, stay for drinks and food, and let the music take over as the light changes.
The transition is what you're there for: beach day to golden hour to evening without needing to completely reset.
THE VIBE
Barefoot Ibiza with a little more intention. Less superclub, more sun-faded, music-led Mediterranean evening.
WHAT TO WEAR
This is where you can loosen everything up.
Think sheer layers, asymmetric silhouettes, open backs, relaxed trousers, interesting swimwear underneath and jewellery that looks better after a day in the sun.

Before Bodrum became one of the Mediterranean's most polished destinations, there was Maçakızı.
Its story began in 1977, when Ayla Emiroğlu opened a small pension and private beach in Bodrum. Her idea was to create a retreat for writers, painters and intellectuals. The property later moved to Türkbükü in 2000 and evolved into the hotel, restaurant and beach club it is today.
That history matters because underneath the yachts and beautiful crowd, there is still something distinctly bohemian about the place.
The hotel tumbles down a green hillside through bougainvillea and gardens toward wooden decks over the Aegean. It's glamorous, certainly, but the glamour comes from being exceptionally considered rather than overtly flashy.
HOW TO DO IT
Treat Maçakızı as an entire afternoon rather than a sunset reservation.
Come for the beach, swim directly from the deck, stay for a long lunch and let the afternoon turn into cocktails. If you're staying elsewhere on the peninsula, arriving from the water only adds to it.
This is one of those rare places where doing very little is essentially the itinerary.
THE VIBE
Bodrum polished.
Where Ibiza is undone, Maçakızı is considered: clean silhouettes, excellent accessories, beautiful swimwear and the sort of outfit that looks simple until you notice every detail.
WHAT TO WEAR
Go more sculptural here. Monochrome dressing, architectural shapes, a strong dress, flat leather sandals, oversized sunglasses and jewellery that feels deliberate.

La Guérite
WHY IT'S ON THE LIST
A lunch reservation that requires a boat already has our attention.
Just offshore from Cannes, Île Sainte-Marguerite feels surprisingly removed from the Croisette. Hidden in a rocky cove on the island is La Guérite, a Mediterranean restaurant and beach that has been welcoming guests since 1902.
You reach it by water. You sit down for lunch. And then lunch has a habit of becoming something else entirely.
The restaurant is currently led by Greek chef Yiannis Kioroglou, whose Mediterranean cooking revolves around fire, charcoal, herbs, marinades and seafood. Beyond the restaurant is more than 400 square metres of beach overlooking the Bay of Cannes.
This is not the place for a quick salade niçoise before catching the boat home.
HOW TO DO IT
Book lunch rather than thinking of this as a conventional sunset stop. La Guérite currently operates during the day, from noon to 6 p.m. in the May-to-September season, so its place on this list is about the hours leading into evening.
Take the shuttle boat from Cannes, arrive hungry and leave the rest of the afternoon open.
The mood tends to build as lunch progresses, which is precisely why you shouldn't schedule much afterwards.
THE VIBE
French Riviera boat-day glamour — social, polished and definitely not anonymous.
You should look like you could go swimming, but also like you knew lunch might turn into the main event.
WHAT TO WEAR
A sleek bodysuit with tailored shorts is exactly the right middle ground.

The best Mediterranean evenings rarely begin at dinner.
They begin somewhere around five — when the beach starts emptying, lunch glasses are still on the table and the light changes enough to convince you to stay a little longer.
Sometimes that means watching a golden Apollo move above the Aegean. Sometimes it's climbing into a Menorcan cave for a drink, swimming beneath a medieval castle in Ischia or taking a boat to an island off Cannes for a lunch with no real end time.
